The Singapore government has banned the two main members of British band Massive Attack from entering the country after they displayed a Palestinian flag and expressed support for the Palestinian cause during a concert held in the city-state last week. Singapore police said in a statement that the musicians were investigated because of their actions during their performance on July 29, including the display of a foreign flag and the moment when one of the members shouted "Free Palestine" ("Free Palestine") on stage. According to authorities, the two received formal warnings and were included on a list that prevents them from returning to the country. "The police treat acts that may undermine racial and religious harmony in Singapore seriously and urge the public, including foreigners, to avoid importing political issues from other countries as this may compromise our social cohesion and the rule of law," the police said. Police did not release the names of those involved, but images shown by the local press identified the musicians as Robert "3D" Del Naja and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall. In a note published on Instagram, Massive Attack stated that they received the decision with "surprise and disappointment". According to the band, a large part of the audience was already chanting "Free Palestine" before the start of the performance and also at the end of the show. The group said it did not imagine that just raising a flag would violate any law, but said it was proud of the "spontaneous demonstration" held alongside fans in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The band also called on the Singapore government to allow its citizens to express their conscience "without fear of persecution by the State".
