I heard “Flor de maracujá” in the recording made by Roberta Sá for the yet unreleased tribute “Viva Donato” and found out for the umpteenth time the perennial influence of Gal Costa's (1945 – 2022) matrix singing on Brazilian music. And it’s not because the music of João Donato (1934 – 2023) and Lysias Ênio was presented to Brazil in Gal’s voice in a recording made 52 years ago for the album “Cantar” (1974). It’s because “Flor de passionuja” echoes a lightness and atmosphere that lead me to Gal Costa’s art. It is said that Gal herself, mother of many voices, recognized herself in Roberta Sá's finely tuned and light singing. And the fact is that, almost four years after the unexpected death of the Bahian singer, Gal still remains a great reference for many successors. The biggest reference, to be more exact. And this echo does not come from today. I saw Gal on Marisa Monte's first album, “Mais” (1991) 35 years ago. I saw Gal in Tulipa Ruiz's corner on the São Paulo artist's first album in 2010. I saw and see Gal in Jussara Silveira's corner. And that doesn't mean that these great singers stopped printing their own vocal signature and building their own history in Brazilian music. It's just that Gal Costa's singing has become a school, a standard. A voice is also a legacy that echoes through time, passing from generation to generation. I know that the recording of “Flor de maracujá” is just one of countless recordings by singers who carry something of Gal in their singing. A beautiful recording, by the way. Perhaps younger ears won't even detect Gal's invisible presence in this phonogram. For me, and I dare say that for everyone of my generation, it is impossible to listen to “Flor de maracujá” with Roberta Sá without thinking about Gal Costa.
