Sovereignty will prevail in Brazil, says Fachin about the use of US military force in the country

"Brazil is a sovereign State, and sovereignty is exercised with firmness and serenity. We are sure that this will prevail, both here in the region and in the global concert of nations", the judge simply replied.

At the beginning of the week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, stated that there is the possibility of the United States using military forces in Brazil after classifying the criminal factions CV (Comando Vermelho) and PCC (Primeiro Comando da Capital) as terrorists.

Fachin's statement was given to journalists at a ceremony at the Barra Funda Criminal Forum, in the capital of São Paulo, for the installation of the new structure specializing in criminal organizations and money laundering. The president of the STF referred to the initiative as a public judicial policy example of the state of São Paulo that deserves to be praised and replicated throughout Brazil.

The new structure transforms the current 1st and 2nd Courts for Tax Crimes, Criminal Organization and Laundering of Assets and Valuables in the Capital into the 1st and 2nd State Courts for Criminal Organizations and Laundering of Assets, Rights and Valuables.

The 3rd State Court of the same specialty and a State Court of Guarantees will also be installed, focused exclusively on the investigative phase of these crimes, in addition to the State Court Specializing in Crimes against the Tax and Economic Order and Crimes in Tenders and Administrative Contracts.

Fachin also drew attention to a new vector of concern: misuse of bets for money laundering and highlighted the need for coordinated action between the Judiciary and other bodies.

When asked about the size of the risk of infiltration by organized crime in the elections, the minister cited political violence as a major concern and said that the Electoral Court is prepared to respond, as it has done in other elections.

The event was also attended by the president of the TJ-SP (Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo), judge Francisco Eduardo Loureiro.

Restructuring the court was one of the priorities of the Loureiro administration at the head of the court given the increase in the number of cases involving organized crime marked by high complexity, multiple defendants, sophisticated financial operations and large-scale investigations.

According to the TJ-SP, today there are around 2,885 criminal actions and investigations involving organized crime and asset laundering in progress in the capital of São Paulo.
