George was sentenced to 36 years in prison under an initially closed regime. He was found guilty of the crimes of feminicide against Jéssica Regina Macedo, the abortion of his own child and also the illegal possession of a firearm.
Conviction was decided by a popular jury. The trial began on Thursday (23) and concluded on Friday night (24), after 20 hours of deliberations.
As it is a first instance decision, it can be appealed. However, George will remain in prison. UOL tries to contact the defendant's defense and this space remains open for demonstrations.
Remember the case
George Passos Santana killed his wife, Jéssica Regina Macedo, with a shotgun blast. At the time of the crime, which occurred on February 5, 2022, Jéssica was 31 years old and was in her eighth month of pregnancy.
Crime occurred in the city of Santo Estevão (BA). At the time, he claimed that the shot that killed Jéssica was an “accidental” shooting. This version was contested by the woman's family and also by the investigation by the Bahian Civil Police. Jéssica was shot in the back. The help was provided by George himself, who took the woman to Hospital Doutor João Borges de Cerqueira. Neither she nor the baby resisted.
George, who was once a councilor in Santo Estevão, has been in prison since 2022. At the time of the events, he held the position of chief of staff at the city hall. He was later exonerated.
