Court denies Sari Corte Real's request to access Fies and study Medicine

Convicted of the death of the boy Miguel, who died after falling from the 9th floor of a luxury building in the center of Recife, Sari Corte Real passed the medical entrance exam at a private college. The university she intends to study at is in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife.

The sentence by judge Náiber Pontes de Almeida, of the 1st Federal Court of the 1st Region, was handed down on June 21st. The decision is of first instance and can be appealed. Estadão tries to contact Sari Corte Real's defense.

Sari Corte Real was convicted by the Pernambuco Court in an action that accused her of abandonment of an incapacitated person resulting in death in the case that culminated in the death of the boy Miguel, in June 2020. The victim, son of Sari's domestic worker, Mirtes Santana, fell from a height of 35 meters in a high-end building in the central area of Recife. The sentence set was 8 years and 6 months in prison.

The boy who fell from the 9th floor of Condomínio Pier Maurício de Nassau was under the care of Sari, while his mother was walking the bosses' dog in the building's block. At the time, Sari's husband was mayor of the city of Tamandaré, on the south coast of Pernambuco.

Sari filed a lawsuit against the National Education Development Fund and Caixa, which denied the request for student financing. The institutions claim that she did not reach the minimum average required in Enem to access the credit line.

Her defense, however, argues that the average Enem score should not be a criterion for selecting candidates and claimed that it meets the Fies requirements. The judge did not accept the arguments.
