Couple arrested on suspicion of killing newborn in RJ

The man and woman, identified as the newborn's parents, were arrested yesterday. According to investigations, the 22-year-old woman gave birth at home in the early hours of the morning with the help of her partner. The Civil Police did not release the names of the two.

The crime was discovered after the woman fell ill and went to the Adão Pereira Nunes Municipal Hospital. Doctors were suspicious and asked about the baby. The military police were called by the hospital team. The family members searched for the newborn's body, which was left in a room at the back of the house, and took it to the medical unit.

The pregnancy was hidden from relatives and friends. Family members only found out about the birth when the young woman needed medical attention due to complications during home birth.

The man confessed in testimony that the baby was born alive and crying. He said the woman squeezed the newborn's neck and pressed a shirt against his face to stop him from crying. Then, the man placed the body in a plastic bag, tied the package and left it in a room at the back of the house.

The woman is hospitalized in stable condition and in custody. She underwent a placental delivery procedure, which occurred uneventfully, according to the city of Duque de Caxias, responsible for the Adão Pereira Nunes Municipalized Hospital.
