Sunflower crops occupy an area cultivated between corn and soybean crops on a property in the interior of São Paulo TV TEM/Reproduction In addition to coloring the landscape with the yellow flowers, the sunflower has established itself as an alternative for rural producers in the interior of São Paulo. Used in the period between corn and soybean harvests or in rotation with peanuts, the crop helps to diversify production and also brings benefits to the soil. In Pederneiras (SP), rural producer Danilo Dornelas returned to planting sunflowers after a few years to take advantage of the area between corn and soybean cultivation. Despite the rain and winds having hampered the start of farming, expectations are positive. In almost 90 hectares planted with the Aguará variety, the forecast is to harvest around 90 tons. The variety is intended for bird feeding and harvesting will be mechanized. According to the producer, sunflower prices are between R$1.50 and R$2 per kilo. Last year, he did not grow the crop, but says that, according to other producers, the amount paid was R$1.50 per kilo. In Itaju (SP), rural producer and agronomist Frauzo Ruiz Sanches uses sunflower in crop rotation with peanuts. The plant adapts well to periods of drought, is resistant to pests and contributes to improving soil conditions due to its deep root system. With a cycle of approximately 60 days, the sunflower enters the flowering phase, when bees begin the pollination process. Frauzo's production is sold to companies in the region that use the seeds to make oil. The harvest has not yet started, but the expectation is to sell the product for R$ 2.85 per kilo, the same value recorded last year. In addition to the financial return, the producer highlights that the cultivation also attracts attention due to the beauty of the crops.
