(FOLHAPRESS) - In the first hours of trading after the reopening of the oil market, on Monday night (13), the price of the commodity continued to rise, expanding the gains of the previous session, which closed with a surge of almost 10%.

At 11pm (Brasília time), the Brent barrel, a global reference, rose 1.10%, to US$ 84.22. WTI (West Texas Intermediate), used in the United States, rose 1.61%, to US$79.40, at the same time. Brent ended this Monday's session at US$83.17, an increase of 9.4%.

The strong rise, which took prices to their highest level in almost a month, occurs amid the intensification of the war in Iran. The commodity was already rising on Sunday (12), and accelerated the rise during the afternoon of this Monday, after US President Donald Trump announced that he must charge a 20% toll on all cargo that passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition to charging tariffs, Trump stated that the US will resume blocking Iranian ships in the sea. "We will maintain control of the strait and probably manage it. We will be the guardians of the strait. Maybe the guardian angel of the strait. And we should be reimbursed for that," the Republican told Fox News.

Iran, in turn, responded in a statement from its joint military command. He stated that he will not allow the US to operate in the region and that he will attack any vessel that does not have his authorization to pass through designated routes. Any aid from countries neighboring the US will still bring retaliation, Tehran said - the support will be seen as "an act of war".

After the market closed, the conflict continued to escalate. The United Arab Emirates said one crew member was killed and eight others were injured after Iranian missile attacks on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

The UAE Ministry of Defense condemned what it called a "blatant attack" and said the UAE maintains "its full right to respond to this escalation."

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, for its part, said two "offending" supertankers were hit and disabled after ignoring repeated warnings, turning off navigation systems and trying to pass through a route the Guard described as mined.

The statement did not name the vessels or say whether it was referring to the same oil tankers cited by the UAE Ministry of Defense.

In the statement, the Guard accused the US of "inciting vessels to use an illegal route" and said cooperation with the "aggressive enemy" would only result in damage, delays in reopening the strait and a global energy crisis.
