August will have extreme rain in the South and the risk of a heat wave in much of Brazil; check with Climatempo

The strengthening of El Niño should intensify weather extremes in Brazil throughout August. According to meteorologist Josélia Pegorim, from Climatempo, the phenomenon continues to heat rapidly in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean and is expected to reach its peak between spring 2026 and the beginning of summer 2026/2027, with intensity classified between strong and very strong.

The first effects were already felt in July, when excess rain caused flooding in areas of Rio Grande do Sul. Now, the influence of El Niño tends to increase, increasing the risk of new storms in the South and favoring heat waves in a large part of the country.

South remains on alert for storms and floods

The forecast indicates above-average rain in the three states of the Southern Region during August. In addition to the high volume of precipitation, Climatempo warns of the possibility of new storms, with strong winds, hail and episodes of severe weather.

The main concern remains in Rio Grande do Sul, which already faced flooding in July and could again record high rainfall throughout the month.

Another factor that reinforces this scenario is the warming of the South Atlantic Ocean. With above-average temperatures along the Brazilian coast, the ocean favors the intensification of low pressure systems and cold fronts that act over the South and Southeast regions.

Southeast and Midwest will have heat, low humidity and isolated rain

In the Southeast and Midwest, August will be marked by many days of heat, dry weather and low relative humidity, which can be below 20% in several areas.

Despite this, two cold fronts are expected to advance through the Center-South: the first at the end of the first week of August and the second, at the end of the month.

These systems can cause rain in part of the regions and cause August to end with above-average volumes in the west and south of Mato Grosso, in Mato Grosso do Sul, in São Paulo, in the Triângulo Mineiro, Sul de Minas, Zona da Mata, the state of Rio de Janeiro and the south of Espírito Santo.

Northeast will have little rain

In the Northeast, the forecast is for strong sunshine and dry weather throughout practically the entire month.

The rains should only be concentrated in coastal areas, between the south of Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte, favored by the warming of the Atlantic waters.

North will have irregular rain

In the North Region, the forecast indicates rainfall volumes slightly above average in Pará, Rondônia and Acre.

On the other hand, the north of Amazonas and Roraima are expected to record below-average rainfall for the period.

Heat wave can hit several regions

In addition to the intense rain in the South, August should also be marked by above-average temperatures in almost all of Brazil.

According to Climatempo, the strengthening of El Niño tends to intensify the typical characteristics of the dry season, increasing the possibility of heat waves over areas of the Central-West, Southeast, North and Northeast.

The regions with the greatest potential for intense heat include Mato Grosso, Goiás, Federal District, western Minas Gerais, western Bahia, northeastern hinterland, central-southern Maranhão, southern Piauí and Tocantins.

Even in the South, where rain will be frequent, temperatures are expected to remain above average due to greater cloudiness and the action of El Niño. Even so, the two cold fronts forecast for August could cause some cold days in the center-south of the country, especially after the passage of these systems.
