Man is shot dead during roping tournament in MT; suspect dies in confrontation with police

According to the incident report, a military police officer who was off duty and was participating in the event with his family heard several gunshots. Soon after, he identified a city councilor carrying a pistol and approached him, removing the gun from the politician. During the approach, the councilor reported that his brother, Jeferson Rodrigo Nunes Mendes, had just been murdered and that he had exchanged shots with the perpetrators of the murder.

With information that the suspects had fled to a forested area, police teams began searching, while an ambulance was called to provide assistance. At the scene, rescuers found that Jeferson had been shot in the head and was already dead.

During the investigation, the police heard new shots nearby. They then located one of the suspects, aged 38. According to the PM, upon noticing the approach of the garrison, the man allegedly shot at the soldiers, who retaliated against the aggression. The suspect was shot during the confrontation. Medical assistance was called immediately, but the rescue team only confirmed the man's death at the scene.

A second suspect, aged 31, managed to escape amid the confusion before the other police teams arrived and is still being sought.

The area was isolated until the arrival of the Civil Police and Politec, responsible for the forensic work and the investigation that will clarify the motivation for the crime and the participation of each of those involved.
