"It is with great sadness that Sam Neill's family shares the news of his death this Monday, July 13, in Sydney, Australia", they began by saying in a post that was made on social media.
"Sam was surrounded by his family and died with the dignity that characterized his entire life. The loss was sudden and unexpected, but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care," they added. The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
It is also worth noting that after a long battle against blood cancer, the actor revealed earlier this year that he was now free of the disease, as Deadline recalls.

Sam Neill was born in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, and throughout his career in the world of dramaturgy he was nominated for Golden Globes and Primetime Emmys several times, as Deadline also recalls.
After Roger Donaldson's film "Sleeping Dogs", released in 1977, Sam Neill achieved prominence in Cannes and international recognition for his work in "My Brilliant Career", in 1979, directed by Gillian Armstrong and starring Judy Davis.
She played several roles throughout the decades of her career, highlighting, among many other projects, films such as "Terror on Board", in 1989, where she starred opposite Nicole Kidman, "The Hunt for Red October", in 1990, or "The Piano", in 1993, directed by Jane Campion and which won the Palme d'Or award, in addition to the Oscar for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay.
