Italian singer and composer Peppino di Capri died this Saturday morning (11), aged 86, on the island of Capri, where he was born. Known internationally for songs such as “Roberta” and “Champagne”, the artist was away from the stage due to illness, but the cause of death was not disclosed.

The information was confirmed by the family to the Ansa news agency. The funeral will be held this Sunday (12), at 5pm local time, at the Church of Santo Stefano, close to Capri's famous Piazzetta.

Christened as Giuseppe Faiella, the musician was born in 1939 and would have turned 87 this month. He leaves three sons: Arrigo, also known as Igor, from his first marriage with Roberta, and Edoardo and Dario, from his union with Giuliana Gagliardi.

Raised in a family of musicians, Peppino learned to play the piano as a child. At the age of 4, he was already performing for American soldiers who were on the island of Capri.

The first big success came in 1958, with “Malatia”. The song launched him onto the Italian music scene alongside the band Rockers and marked the beginning of a career that spanned more than six decades.

Along the way, Peppino di Capri recorded hits such as “Champagne”, “Roberta”, “E mo e mo”, “Let’s Twist Again”, “St. Tropez Twist”, “Nessuno al Mondo”, “Voce”, “Amare di Meno” and “Il sognatore”.

The 1960s consolidated the peak of the singer's popularity. In 1965, he participated in a historic moment when he shared the stage with the Beatles during the British group's tour of Italy.

The artist also accumulated important recognition. In 1970, he won the last edition of the Neapolitan Song Festival. At the Sanremo Festival, he won first place in 1973 and 1976. In 2023, he received a lifetime achievement honor during the event.

In 2019, Peppino faced the death of his wife, Giuliana, which occurred shortly before his 80th birthday.

The singer's last public appearance took place about a year before his death, during a night organized in his honor. Applauded by the public, he took to the stage and performed “Champagne” and “Il sognatore” accompanied by the band Capri Rockers, led by his son Edoardo.
