The sentence terminated the music publishing contract signed almost six decades ago with Editora Musical Arlequim.
The action was filed in February 2025 by Milton, Isabel Ferreira Brant and the publishers that currently represent the authors. The group requested the termination of the contract with Arlequim, the recognition of ownership of the patrimonial rights to the work and the payment of compensation for losses and damages.
The case is being processed in the 15th Civil Court of the Central Court of São Paulo and was judged by judge Mauro Civolani Forlin.
In the decision, the judge recognized as valid the new contracts signed by the authors with other publishers for the economic exploitation of "Travessia". It also determined that Editora Musical Arlequim ceases to perform any act related to the patrimonial rights of the music, including granting authorizations for its use or receiving amounts resulting from the exploitation of the work. In case of non-compliance, a fine of R$5,000 per act was imposed.
Furthermore, the publisher was ordered to pay the authors the amounts that were not transferred throughout the term of the contract. The amount of compensation, however, will only be defined during the settlement phase of the sentence. The decision can still be challenged through appeal.
The legal victory comes at a time when Milton is discharged from hospital. The artist was hospitalized last week, in Rio de Janeiro, to treat pneumonia and returned home after recovery. The information was released by his son, Augusto Nascimento, who thanked him for the support and messages of affection.
In 2023, the singer was diagnosed with Parkinson's and, last year, it was revealed that he also faces Lewy body dementia.
