On a boat, Tom Hanks, speaking as if he were Forrest Gump playing Robert Redford, and Martin Short, playing Paul Newman, recreate in a parody tone one of the most striking scenes from the Western. In it, the two thieves, cornered by the police and with no other way out than to jump from a cliff into a river of icy waters, experience an unusual moment: Sundance Kid, Redford's character, confesses to Butch Cassidy that he doesn't know how to swim. The more experienced partner bursts into laughter, ties his own hand to his friend's and, without leaving room for hesitation, jumps off the cliff.
The filming of the scene between friends was recorded because one of the guests on the holiday trips was Steven Spielberg, who later says in an interview that, as he had no talent for entertaining his friends, he hid behind his Super 8 camera. At another party, where everyone was always invited to sing, play the piano or do some comical scene, actress Sally Field lifts her skirt and climbs onto the piano, where she takes the microphone and sings a song.
The home camera seems omnipresent, and there are intimate scenes, like Martin Short reading a book with one of his children under a year old, or, in another situation, watching the baby watching a scene of his father on TV and dying laughing. In several passages, the actor himself is filming, and, at least in the one hour and forty minutes of the documentary "Marty Life is Short", he never encountered any resistance from his wife, who always seemed to find her husband amused. As more than one interviewee confirms, Nancy laughed at Martin Short's jokes like a normal person, not like his wife. That is, for real. I think.
The director of the documentary is one of the friends who attended Martin Short's family's houses and parties, both in Los Angeles, where they lived for work, and on the lakefront in the Toronto region, where they spent their holidays. And that friend is Lawrence Kasdan, director of the classics "The Big Chill", "Silverado", "Wyatt Earp" and "Burning Bodies", among many others.
Short is Canadian and arrived in the United States alongside a generation of fellow countrymen that included Catherine O'Hara (1954 - 2026), Eugene Levy, John Candy (1950-1994), Rick Moranis, Andrea Martin and Victor Garber. The group met in Toronto in the 1970s, joined the cast of the Canadian production of the musical "Godspell", played at the local branch of the Second City improvisation company -created in Chicago- and, finally, consolidated itself on the comedy television show SCTV.
When the TV show was canceled by the Canadian channel, everyone moved to Los Angeles or New York in search of better job opportunities. Short was immediately invited to join the cast of "Saturday Night Live," the legendary American TV comedy show that featured Adam Driver, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Seth Meyers and Marcello Hernández.
Short, interestingly enough, only stayed on "SNL" for a year, because the weekly program required many hours of work and total dedication. And at that point, between 1984 and 1985, he was already married and had three young children and preferred not to spend so much time away from his family.
With many more failures than successes in his career and quite dramatic moments in his personal life, what is most enchanting about getting to know this brilliant comic actor a little more deeply is how he seems to have a natural gift for being happy and enjoying life. It's almost as if he were an activist for the cause, one of those tireless people, but whose only theme is living well.
When he loses a family member, as happens, but I won't say who, he suffers the blow, like everyone else, but then he reacts in the most constructive way, without sentimentality, honoring his dead, always remembering them, but with the certainty that allowing himself to be overcome by the loss is a disservice to all the love he felt for the person.
“It always works at the speed of pleasure,” explains Hanks. "It's the only constant in Martin Short's story", adds the friend. If this isn't a life lesson, I don't know what else could be.
