Before the bilateral meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, Trump reinforced the threats of new attacks, warning that he could launch a major offensive. Following the American leader's comments about Kharg Island, Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesman for the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, countered the threat. "Come — we are waiting for you — and we promise that no American soldier will return alive," Rezaei said. Ali Akbar Velayati, Iran's former foreign minister, also criticized the "latest escalation", stating in X that Iran had "previously warned that 'the region is no place for political bets by small nations'" and that the country "has its finger on the trigger to clean up the region". Why is Kharg Island so important? Kharg Island is a coral formation located just 25 kilometers off the coast of Iran, in the Persian Gulf.
