According to the Fire Department, the accident between the van and a box truck happened around 5 am. Upon impact, the truck caught fire. Patients who were in the van, all from the TFD (Out of Home Treatment) service in Petrolândia, were trapped in the wreckage. The truck driver burned to death.
The other victims are five patients and the van driver. They were heading to the city of Arcoverde (PE) for medical treatment.
The information was confirmed by Petrolândia City Hall and the names of the dead have not yet been released. Another four patients who were in the municipal vehicle were taken to hospitals in the cities of Floresta and Ibimirim.
In a statement, Floresta City Hall reported that a female patient was admitted to the Municipal Hospital. She needs sutures, complains of headache and vomiting episode. After medical evaluation, the patient was transferred to Eduardo Campos Hospital, in Serra Talhada. The frame is stable.
The health status of the patients who were sent to Ibimirim hospitals has not yet been released.
According to firefighters, the van was completely destroyed. The causes of the crash will be investigated. The IC (Institute of Criminalistics) went to the scene to carry out the investigation.
"We dawned with the sad news of a tragic accident involving residents of our city. At this moment, we are monitoring the situation closely, seeking all the information and providing the necessary support to the victims and their families. We remain in prayer and solidarity with everyone involved", informed, in a note, the City of Petrolândia.
The city hall of the city of 34,000 inhabitants declared official mourning for three days.
