Romeu Zema, Novo's pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, tried to distance himself politically from Jair Bolsonaro this Monday (6), stating that he is against any coup attempt and that he has differences with the former president.

The statements were made during a debate promoted by the group Derrubando Muros, in São Paulo. At the meeting, the former governor of Minas Gerais said that his relationship with Bolsonaro was circumstantial and was mainly linked to the 2018 election and the opposition to the PT.
“What happened was that I was elected together with Bolsonaro,” said Zema. According to him, the support given to the former president in the 2022 second round was motivated by the dispute against the PT, the party responsible for the financial situation of Minas Gerais.
"Wherever the PT is contesting an election, I will go there to support whoever is on the other side, even if it is Bolsonaro. I supported Bolsonaro in the 2022 second round against the PT", he declared.
Zema also sought to distance himself from the stance adopted by Bolsonaro during the pandemic. The pre-candidate stated that, in Minas Gerais, he conducted the period differently than the then president and said he believed in science.
In the institutional area, the former governor declared himself a Democrat and said he trusted electronic voting machines. Despite this, he defended the adoption of some type of printed mechanism that allows random conferences and audits of the voting system.
“I am totally against any attempted coup,” he said.
Even when trying to disassociate himself from Bolsonaro, Zema maintained his defense of amnesty for the former president. He stated that the case could undergo a new trial.
Bolsonaro was sentenced in September 2025 by the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court to 27 years and 3 months in prison, in an initial closed regime, for participating in an attempted coup d'état. For the STF, the former president acted as an intellectual mentor for the coup plot, promoted camps, participated in the preparation of drafts and monitored authorities.
