Xuxa Meneghel recalled the relationship she had with Pelé in the 1980s and revealed that she faced constant jokes and nasty comments because of their relationship. The presenter said that, at the time, she had...
In an interview with Quem magazine, Xuxa stated that many people questioned the authenticity of her relationship with the King of Football and reduced her to the status of "Pelé's girlfriend", even when her career was already gaining international prominence.
"People made a lot of jokes, but it was almost normal in the 80s. We heard that all blonde women were stupid. I heard a lot of jokes about my relationship with Pelé. People didn't believe I liked him. He made jokes himself," he said.
The couple was together for about six years. In 1987, while they were dating, Xuxa was included by the French newspaper Libération among the ten most prominent women in the world.
The presenter said that, despite feeling uncomfortable with the comments, she was unable to respond or impose limits.
"It was a normal thing and I felt bad, but I couldn't speak. I heard a lot of things and didn't respond. I get very upset for myself. I had a lot of opportunities to defend myself. I heard people talking and didn't say anything. I think that, before they took away my merit, I took it away myself", she stated.
Xuxa also remembered the encouragement she received from her mother, Alda Meneghel, who always reinforced her confidence and potential.
"All the time my mother said that I was a different and special person. Sometimes, I said: 'No, I won't make it'. She said: 'You will definitely make it. If you don't make it, no one will make it'. For my mother, I was the best", he recalled.
When taking stock of her career, the presenter stated that she considers her ability to encourage other people to believe in their own dreams as one of her greatest legacies.
“I believe that one of the most important things I have done was to make people believe in their dreams,” he declared.
Today, Xuxa says she continues to cultivate new personal goals. Among them is the desire to see her daughter, Sasha Meneghel, happy and fulfill her dream of being a grandmother.
"Today I have a dream of seeing my daughter very happy and seeing my grandchildren. I really wanted to leave more than I have already managed to leave to people", he concluded.
