Businessman Elon Musk mocked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman after Apple filed a lawsuit against the creator of ChatGPT on charges of theft of industrial secrets. In a post on the social network X, Musk stated that Altman “takes cheating to a whole new level”.

The demonstration occurred after Apple filed a lawsuit in federal court in California. In the process, the company accuses OpenAI of using confidential information to accelerate the development of its own artificial intelligence device.

According to the iPhone maker, OpenAI encouraged former Apple employees to share confidential development data and guided these professionals on ways to avoid internal oversight.

Among the defendants are Tang Tan, head of hardware at OpenAI and former designer of the iPhone and Apple Watch, and electrical engineer Chang Liu. The action also mentions io Products, a company founded by designer Jony Ive and acquired by OpenAI in a deal valued at around US$6.5 billion.

OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company is still reviewing the petition, but said the company has no interest in competitors' trade secrets.

In April, OpenAI's chief financial officer, Sarah Friar, had indicated that the launch of the new device could take place by the end of this year.

The new corporate dispute comes just weeks after the conclusion of another legal battle involving Altman. On May 18, an Oakland federal court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Musk against OpenAI.

The jury concluded, based on a procedural deadline issue accepted by judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, that the businessman lost the legal period to sue the company.

In the action, Musk accused Altman and Greg Brockman of “betraying OpenAI's original non-profit mission”. The businessman invested around US$38 million in the company during its first years of operation.

OpenAI's defense, in turn, maintained that the process represented an attempt to benefit xAI, a competitor founded by Musk in 2023.
