SÃO, PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - "Supergirl"'s time in theaters ended far from the result expected by Warner Bros. A few weeks after leaving the exhibition circuit, the film has already arrived on digital rental and purchase platforms, such as Prime Video, carrying an undesirable title: the worst commercial performance of a DC film in the last 20 years.

According to estimates released by Variety, the production grossed approximately US$125.9 million worldwide, with around US$72 million in the North American market alone. As the production budget was in the range of US$ 170 million - without considering advertising costs -, the studio is expected to record a loss close to US$ 100 million.

The result puts the film below practically all of DC's recent releases. Among them are "Blue Beetle" (2023), which closed its career with US$130.8 million at the global box office, and "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" (2023), which grossed US$134.1 million.

Productions such as "Wonder Woman" 1984 ($169.6 million) and "The Suicide Squad" ($169.7 million) also appear ahead of Supergirl, both affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the simultaneous release on streaming. Even in the face of this unfavorable scenario, they managed to surpass the heroine's performance.

The list also includes "Watchmen" (US$ 185 million), "Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn" and "Sua Emancipação Fantabulosa" (US$ 205 million), "Joker: Delirium for Two" (US$ 206 million), "Green Lantern" (US$ 237.2 million) and "The Flash" (US$ 271.3 million), all with higher grossings.

Despite the disappointing performance, Supergirl does not rank as the absolute lowest-grossing film in DC history. That record still belongs to "Jonah Hex - The Bounty Hunter" (2010).

The western starring Josh Brolin cost around $47 million and grossed just $10.9 million worldwide. In the United States, it debuted with just over US$5 million in its first weekend, becoming one of the biggest commercial failures in the studio's history.
