International organizations linked to the music industry have created an identification system to inform consumers about the use of artificial intelligence in musical recordings, announced the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

The initiative foresees the adoption of visual tags on streaming platforms. Badges will indicate whether a song was “Created by AI” or produced “With the help of AI.”

According to IFPI, the symbols will allow the public to quickly understand how the technology was used in each recording. The model can be updated as new artificial intelligence tools emerge.

The proposal was developed jointly by entities such as the Grammy Academy, the North American union SAG-AFTRA, which represents more than 160 thousand entertainment professionals, the European organization IMPALA and the Recording Industry Association of the United States.

A recording will receive the “AI-Created” seal when most or all of its elements, such as voice, composition and interpretation, were generated by artificial intelligence tools or commands.

The identification “With the help of AI” will be applied to songs produced mostly by people, but which used generative artificial intelligence in some creative elements.

The entities involved intend to work with streaming services and music distribution companies to expand the adoption of the system in the market.

“Fans want to know how and if generative artificial intelligence is being used in the music they listen to,” said IFPI’s Vikki Oakley and RIAA’s Mitch Glazier in a statement.

The organizations also cited recent data on the growth of this type of content. In April, the Deezer platform reported that 44% of the songs added to the catalog were generated by artificial intelligence. Apple Music estimated that one in every three tracks available on the service was produced entirely by AI.
