The friendly between Benfica and Flamengo ended in a tense atmosphere on and off the field. The arrival of Argentine Gianluca Prestianni, in the first half, provoked boos in the stands, harsh fouls and an argument between members of the two technical committees.

The Benfica player started the match on the bench and was called on in the 27th minute. Shortly afterwards, he received strong entries from Emerson Royal and Erick Pulgar, in moves that raised the temperature of the confrontation.

Afterwards, Leonardo Jardim discussed with members of the commission led by Marco Silva. The argument lasted around two minutes and increased the feeling that the match had ceased to be merely preparatory in nature.

Prestianni also began to be harassed by Flamengo fans, who booed and cursed him whenever he participated in the plays.

After the game, Samuel Lino minimized the possibility of a direct reaction from the red and black players to the history involving the Argentine.

"Playing against Flamengo is that. It's a tough, tough game. There's no such thing as a player having a problem with us or with an athlete who played for the club. Vini Jr. is special, but that had nothing to do with the game", he stated.

The rejection of Prestianni is linked to the episode that occurred in February, during a match between Benfica and Real Madrid in the Champions League. At the time, he was accused of directing a racist insult at Vinicius Júnior.

According to reports made on the pitch, the Argentine had called the Brazilian a “monkey”. UEFA imposed a six-match suspension for “discriminatory conduct”.

The confusion began after Vinicius scored a goal at Estádio da Luz and celebrated near an area occupied by organized Benfica fans. Players from the Portuguese team complained, and the Brazilian ended up being warned with a yellow card.

When the match was about to restart, Vini went to referee François Letexier and reported that he had been the target of racism. Kylian Mbappé also claimed that Prestianni had made racist comments.

Faced with the accusation, the judge activated UEFA's anti-racism protocol and interrupted the game for approximately ten minutes. Vinicius received support from teammates like Mbappé and Tchouaméni, while members of the two teams argued on the side of the field.

After the stoppage, Benfica fans began to insult the Brazilian striker and threw objects in his direction. The match resumed, but Vini and Mbappé continued to be booed.

The episode also influenced a change in football rules. The International Board has ruled that players who hide their mouths when insulting opponents can be expelled. The rule came into force during the World Cup and has already resulted in red cards in the competition.
