Djair Benedito Nogueira, 67, was killed with stab wounds to the neck and chest. The case took place in the Jaburuna neighborhood, in Vila Velha, in Greater Vitória.
The suspect claimed that a homeless man had stabbed his uncle while he slept. According to the Military Police, the nephew was visibly nervous and agitated, and told authorities that he had gone out to buy bread, and when he returned he found the door of the house open and heard screams. He stated that he had fought with the attacker, who had fled shortly afterwards.
The nephew's version raised suspicions due to the inconsistencies in the report. There were no signs of freshly purchased bread in the house, and the suspect had taken a shower and tried to clean up traces of blood around the property.
The suspect had borrowed money from his uncle and had drug problems, according to the Military Police. A notebook with notes from the victim charging his nephew for money he allegedly lent was found in the residence.
The Civil Police reported that the incident was initially registered as a robbery and is ongoing. The suspect was taken to the Homicide and Personal Protection Police Station (DHPP). The victim's body was sent to the Instituto Médico-Legal (IML), in Vitória, where it will undergo an autopsy process and will then be released to family members.
