Did you open the fridge and remember that lettuce that was forgotten for a few days and ended up withering? Many people throw the leaves away, but there is a simple way to recover them and make them crispy again. The tip was shared by the creator of the "Especialista Agrícola" page in a video published on social media.

"Just put very cold water in a container, add some ice cubes and soak the leaves for 15 to 20 minutes", he explains.

It's science, not magic: why does the trick work?

According to the expert, the explanation lies in the plant's cells.

"Each lettuce leaf is made up of millions of cells, and each cell functions like a small balloon filled with water. When these 'balloons' are full and under pressure, the leaf becomes firm and crispy. This pressure is called turgor."

She explains that when lettuce remains outside the ground for a long time, it loses water.

"The 'little balloons' deflate and the sheet deflates. It's the same thing that happens with an inflatable mattress when the air escapes."

When immersing the leaves in water, a process called osmosis comes into play.

"Water always moves from where there is more to where there is less. As there is less water inside the cells, it enters naturally, without needing any type of pump. The 'balloons' inflate again and the lettuce regains its firmness."

How to make lettuce last longer in the fridge The trick is simple: just wrap the lettuce in aluminum foil before storing it in the fridge.

According to the Informe Brasil portal, the secret is controlling humidity. The aluminum foil creates a kind of "microclimate", reducing air circulation, reducing condensation and helping to maintain a more stable temperature. This prevents the leaves from wilting and turning brown.

Before packaging, however, it is important to ensure that the lettuce is completely dry.

What about when the lettuce is already cut? If the lettuce is already chopped, there is another technique that also helps to preserve it for longer.

Place the leaves in a glass jar, cover with paper towel, close the lid tightly and store the container upside down in the refrigerator.

The paper towel absorbs excess moisture, while the air trapped inside the pot helps keep the leaves firm and fresh for several days.
