In a statement, the Houthi Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC) said ships are prohibited from loading or unloading goods at Saudi terminals. The body was created to maintain contact with shipping companies and disseminate warnings about attacks carried out by the movement in the Red Sea.
According to the HOCC, any maritime operation related to Saudi Arabia could result in sanctions. The group added that vessels considered violators could be hit anywhere within the range of their forces.
The warning was issued a day after the Huthis announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia. Since 2015, the country has led a military coalition that supports the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
The rebels intensified attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea after the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023. The movement claims to act in solidarity with the Palestinians and seeks to pressure Israel.
Now, the strategy also includes Saudi Arabia directly.
The new escalation occurred after Yemeni government forces bombed Sanaa International Airport, controlled by the Huthis, on Monday. The objective, according to authorities, was to prevent the landing of an Iranian plane.
The rebels held Riyadh responsible for the attack and classified the action as another episode of the blockade imposed on areas under their control. In response, they announced new threats against the neighboring country.
