Don't die! 8 plants perfect for places without windows

If you work in an office without windows or have an isolated space at home, you may have put aside the possibility of placing plants there.

Although no species can survive without light for a long period of time, there are plants that grow in low-light environments or with artificial/grow lights.

Plant experts revealed 9 examples to Martha Stewart's website.

1. Philodendron

The Philodendron family includes several plants that grow in places without windows. "Philodendrons are known to grow well in low-light conditions," noted gardening book author Enid Offolter.

Philodendrons are toxic to pets, so be careful.

2. Sword of Saint George

The Sword of Saint George is one of the most popular species because it is easy to maintain. "A windowless space doesn't mean plants won't get any light," noted horticulturist Laura Irish-Hanson.

"Most offices have overhead lights on for at least eight hours a day. Plants perceive this light, and some species grow very well." The Sword of Saint George is one of the best examples.

3. ZZ Plant

ZZ plants are known for being low maintenance, surviving low light and low watering environments.

"I know people who grow them in completely dark indoor environments," Offolter noted.

4. Boa constrictor

The fast-growing boa is a perfect plant for beginners, notes Irish-Hanson. "They adapt to low light, infrequent watering and can grow with little fertilizer." As they are climbing plants, they also have a decorative component.

5. Bromeliad

There are many plants in the bromeliad family, but the species most cultivated as indoor plants are Vriesea and Guzmania. Both offer stunning flowers, with a tropical appearance, vibrant colors and unusual shapes.

Since in their natural habitat they grow in low light, due to the dense vegetation, they are used to environments with low light. They are perfect for the bathroom or office without windows.

6. Peace Lily

Peace lilies grow well in low light environments. "I've seen peace lilies do very well in just the natural light of an office," says gardening author Lisa Eldred Steinkopf.

Be careful as they are toxic to pets.

7. Monstera

Monstera may not be the first option that comes to mind for low-light environments, but it is also resistant. In this case, experts advise investing in a cultivation plant.

8. Spider Plant

Originally from some regions of Africa, the Spider Plant grows quickly and thrives in low-light environments, such as dark or windowless rooms.
