A photograph taken by a pastor recorded the last moments of a group of friends before a tragedy on the Scioto River, in the state of Ohio, in the United States. The image shows five adults fishing in waist-deep water shortly before they all entered the river and drowned during a rescue attempt. The author of the photo, Marcus Leon Martin, stated that he regrets not having warned the group about the risks of the location.

In an interview with The Sun newspaper, Martin said he has been sailing along the Scioto River for more than ten years and immediately recognized that the stretch where the group was was dangerous. According to him, the area has steep slopes and a cliff that leads to the river.
"I believe that the photo I took may have been the last photo of them alive", declared the pastor. He also revealed that he thought about warning adults about the danger, mainly because two children were with them.
Martin said he decided to photograph the group because he had a feeling something was wrong. "I don't know what it was. I thought: I need to record this image", he recalled. Since the accident, he said he has had difficulty sleeping because he had not been alerted.
According to authorities, the tragedy began when one of the members entered the water to swim and was swept away by the strong current. Two other people tried to help him, but they were also in danger. The two remaining adults entered the river to help, but neither managed to return to the bank.
The accident was only discovered after a driver found one of the children crying on the side of a road at around 9pm. Two women were pulled from the water alive, but died in hospital. The bodies of the three men were located the following day.
Among the victims were José Mario Pineda Dias, 33, and his wife, Marina Suyapa Regalado, 28, who left two children. Miguel Ángel Guerra and Carmen Idalia Lara Ferrera, both 33, left behind a 7-year-old child, according to an online fundraising campaign.
