Corinthians trust in Memphis' renewal even with the end of the contract this Friday

The report found that the signing of the new contract will only take place in person, after the attacker has undergone medical examinations in Brazil. Corinthians and Memphis rule out the possibility of formalizing the renewal virtually.

Even without signing by this Friday, the club's understanding is that there is no risk of the player no longer being registered. Corinthians considers that the contract renewal can be carried out even with the two transfer bans currently active.

Corinthians is based on consultations carried out with the CBF at the beginning of the year, when it was prevented from registering players due to a debt with Santos Laguna, from Mexico. At the time, the club was also dealing with the contractual situations of left-back Fabrizio Angileri and midfielder Maycon.

In the end, Angileri renewed his contract in February, when the debt with Santos Laguna had already been paid off and the transfer ban was overturned, and Maycon could not reach an agreement to stay and arranged his transfer to Atlético-MG. Even so, sources linked to Corinthians assure that the club maintains contact with the highest authority in Brazilian football to protect itself legally regarding Memphis' registration.

In an investigation with the CBF, the report heard that, as Corinthians was the last club registered by the attacker, a possible contract extension is possible even after the end of the current contract. The understanding is that the player still maintains a connection with the club for registration purposes.

The entity takes into account the athlete's registration period, which expired on June 20, more than a month before the end of the contract. The date arises from an error by Corinthians' legal department when formalizing the Dutchman's contract, in September 2024.

RIGHT RENEWAL

The report found that there is great optimism in the Corinthians football department regarding the renewal of Memphis Depay.

Behind the scenes at the club, however, the situation is still treated with caution due to political pressure against the striker's contract extension over president Osmar Stábile.

Club and player exchanged drafts of the new contract on Thursday night. Now, the athlete's legal team is analyzing the terms of the agreement, which was agreed verbally last weekend.

The expectation is that Memphis, who is in the Netherlands, will return to Brazil at the beginning of next week to undergo medical examinations and sign the new contract, valid until 2028.

While awaiting his return to the country, the attacker maintains his physical work at a high level. The player's understanding is that he may be able to play for a few minutes in the duel against Internacional, next Thursday, in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil.

Memphis' main objective, however, is to be 100% physically ready for the clashes against Rosário Central, in the round of 16 of the Libertadores, scheduled for the 13th and 20th of August.

SALARY REDUCTION AND DEBT INSTALLMENTS

To remain at Corinthians, Memphis Depay accepted a significant reduction in his salaries. In case of renewal, the attacker will receive around R$2 million per month.

The player also gave up benefits provided for in the current contract, such as housing paid for by the club, in addition to expenses for the cook, driver and private security.

Another point agreed is the fixing of Corinthians' debt with the athlete at R$42 million. Memphis agreed to waive interest, fines and other charges that would increase the total amount of the debt. In addition, the club will be able to pay the pending payment in installments, scheduled to start only in February 2027.

Even in the face of surveys from clubs in Türkiye, the Middle East and Mexico, Memphis prioritized staying at Corinthians. The decision was influenced by the dream of winning the Libertadores this season, the objective of remaining in the Dutch national team cycle until the 2028 Euro Cup and the artistic, commercial and social projects that the striker has been developing in Brazil since his arrival at the club.
