The scene was recorded on video on July 30, close to the end of the working day. In the images, the animals walk calmly through the internal space until they are prevented from advancing through the turnstiles that access the other sectors.
An employee tried to lead the capybaras back to the outside area and towards Parque das Águas, located next to the Legislative headquarters.
“They appear here quite frequently, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” Nayara Bueno told the Associated Press.
Why do capybaras appear in the Mato Grosso Assembly?
The presence of animals in the region is recurrent due to its proximity to the park, which brings together green areas, lakes and other conditions favorable to wildlife.
This was not the first time that capybaras were seen on the Assembly premises. On another occasion, the animals were filmed cooling off in the building's fountain.
In Parque das Águas, they also usually cross the streets using pedestrian crossings. Some of these locations received drawings of yellow footprints to alert drivers about the frequent movement of animals.
Visit did not cause damage to the building
Despite the unexpected movement, the capybaras did not cause damage or injure employees or visitors. After remaining at reception for a few minutes, they were led out of the building.
Native to South America, capybaras are the largest rodents in the world and can weigh up to 80 kilograms. They are semi-aquatic animals, generally live in groups and usually occupy areas close to rivers, lakes and swamps.
The species has also gained popularity on social media for its calm and sociable behavior.
