According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred 48 kilometers from the municipality of Aquiles Serdán, at a depth of 15.2 kilometers, at 9:48 am local time (11:48 am in Brasília).
Previously, the service had reported that the earthquake had occurred 135 kilometers from Ciudad Hidalgo, at a depth of 10 kilometers, but the information was later revised.
The shock was felt in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.

The United States Tsunami Warning System warned that, "based on preliminary earthquake parameters", a tsunami could occur "on coasts located up to 300 kilometers from the epicenter."
The Spanish news agency EuropaPress reported that, so far, there is no knowledge of any victims or material damage.
