Law provides for R$100 for each wild boar killed in Santa Catarina. The Brazilian Environmental Institute (Ibama) has authorized the hunting of wild boars since 2013 to control the species. Santa Catarina also has a specific state policy on the topic since 2023, law nº 18,817, which authorizes "the sustainable management of the European wild boar". Last Wednesday (15), however, the Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina (Alesc) approved a bill that provides for the payment of R$100 per boar slaughtered. The proposal still needs the governor's approval to become law. ?Click and follow the g1 SC channel on WhatsApp According to the Santa Catarina Environmental Institute (IMA-SC), the wild boar (Sus scrofa) is an invasive exotic species recognized by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) as harmful to fauna, flora, agricultural production and public health. ? For this reason, Brazilian legislation allows population control through slaughter, as long as the legal requirements established by the competent bodies are observed. The president of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of SC (Faesc), José Zeferino Pedrozo, argues that the uncontrolled proliferation of wild boars has become one of the most serious pests of agribusiness in Santa Catarina. "The damage affects corn, beans, soybeans, wheat, pastures, vegetables and poultry and pig farms. In one night, several hectares can be destroyed. Accelerated reproduction worsens the situation: females have, on average, two litters per year, with around eight offspring each", he explains. ? Law authorizes the slaughter of wild boars Hunting and handling wild boars are permitted in Santa Catarina. The activity is authorized by law exclusively for population control of the species. Authorization for the management and control of wild boar is the responsibility of Ibama. To do this, the agency uses the Integrated Fauna Management System (Simaf), through which authorizations for population control of the species are issued. To obtain authorization, the applicant must enter personal data into the system, the location of the management area, the control methods that will be used and other information provided for in the regulations. Anyone can register to carry out wild boar control, as long as they are regularly registered in Ibama's Federal Technical Registry (CTF) and have no administrative issues with the agency. After this registration, the interested party can register for the invasive exotic fauna management activity and then access Simaf to request authorization. ? The breeding of wild boars in captivity is prohibited in Brazil. The identification of irregular breeding sites or activities carried out in violation of issued authorizations may result in the adoption of appropriate administrative and legal measures by supervisory bodies.
