In the midst of monitoring birdlife, in the municipality of Oriximiná, in western Pará, he heard a song that he only knew from recordings. The suspicion was soon confirmed: it was a Guiana uirapuru (Cyphorhinus arada), one of the most emblematic birds in the Amazon. ? It was at that moment that he heard the first note of the song. "That day I was walking along a trail during bird monitoring work. While I was photographing a goliath spider, I heard a note from a song that caught my attention. I thought it could be a uirapuru, but I wasn't sure yet", he says. Shortly afterwards, the bird began to vocalize again. The researcher decided to remain in place while the rest of the team continued along the trail. The strategy worked. "After a few minutes, I managed to locate the bird and record it on video. It was a very emotional moment. According to Vinícius, listening to the bird is usually much easier than finding it among the vegetation. "The vocalization attracts a lot of attention within the forest, but the bird remains hidden in the understory, among the denser vegetation. Often you can hear the song for several minutes, but cannot locate the animal." This discreet behavior is precisely what makes the record so special. The species lives in dense rainforest environments on dry land and avoids exposing itself, remaining among low vegetation. The "true uirapuru" gained new relatives For a long time, Cyphorhinus arada was known as the "true uirapuru" and was treated as a single species. However, recent studies have shown that that group was, in reality, made up of five distinct species of uirapuru. The review was based on different evidence, such as plumage characteristics, geographic distribution, genetic analyzes and, mainly, differences in vocalizations. The Guiana uirapuru occurs mainly north of the Amazon River, including areas in western Pará and Guianas, presenting its own vocal repertoire that helps to differentiate it from the other species in the group. Science and conservation In addition to the emotion of finding such a symbolic bird, Vinícius highlights that image and sound records have scientific importance. According to him, recordings help confirm the occurrence of the species in a given region and provide useful information for research into distribution, behavior and vocalization. "In the case of the Guiana uirapuru, which is a discreet and difficult to find species, this type of record helps to expand knowledge about its natural history and can serve as support for future research and databases on Amazonian biodiversity."
