The green areas and reforestation actions of São Sebastião City Hall will be expanded after the arrival of 1,280 seedlings of rare species at the Municipal Nursery, this Wednesday (15/7). The plants come from an environmental compensation process. The initiative reinforces the municipality’s Urban Afforestation Program. According to a report from the Department of the Environment (Semam), more than 615 seedlings were planted in the first half of 2026. The seedlings came from a project located on the South Coast of São Sebastião. Among the donated species are common and yellow grumixama, common and black pitanga, guanandi, aroeira-pementa, araçá-vermelho, araçá-amarelo, cambucá, cambuci and bacupari. Whether in a public or private area, any removal of isolated trees depends on authorization issued by Semam. Without the document, fines and administrative sanctions are expected. Law 2,878/2022 is applicable to isolated trees and palm trees present in public or private areas, but does not apply to trees that make up fragments of native vegetation or forest massifs. In accordance with Law 2,878/2022 and upon analysis by the Department of the Environment, it is necessary to present a technical report prepared by a qualified professional for the suppression of six or more tree or palm trees in the same area. For up to five copies, a simplified procedure may be adopted, also subject to evaluation by Semam. Citizens in a situation of social vulnerability and without financial conditions are exempt from presenting the technical report, subject to an inspection by a qualified inspector from the secretariat and proof of the condition through a declaration of social vulnerability. Any authorization to cut down a tree or isolated palm tree is linked to environmental compensation, through the donation of seedlings to the Municipal Nursery and payment of the fees established by legislation.
