According to the Public Defender's Office of the State of Amazonas (DPE-AM), the landslides were caused by the construction of a mattress factory warehouse and individual payments range from R$10,000 to R$110,000. The families approached the Public Defender's Office in February, after their homes were hit by two landslides, and the agreement was reached in less than four months. Francisco Edson Batista, 45 years old, reported that the land at the back of the factory gave way during a storm, and the mud invaded seven homes located below the construction area, causing partial destruction of the properties and various material losses. ? "I don't even like to remember, because the mud came dragging everything: sofa, table, bed. I only had time to pick up my three children and leave", he recalled. According to the head of the Specialized Public Defender's Office (DPEIC), public defender Carlos Almeida Filho, the first step was to file a request for urgent protection to embargo the irregular work and order the company to adopt measures to contain waste. "We identified the seriousness of the situation as soon as we were called. The Public Defender's Office adopted measures to immediately embargo the work and to avoid further losses. The engineering and architecture sector followed the containment measures requested by the institution." Carlos Almeida Filho also highlighted that the Defender's Office monitors two other communities with similar situations, in the Cidade Nova neighborhoods, in the North Zone, and Alvorada, in the West Zone.
