União Brasil formalizes Roberto Cidade's candidacy for the Government of Amazonas. Patrick Marques/g1 AM The União Progressista Federation confirmed the candidacy of Roberto Cidade (União Brasil) for the Government of Amazonas in the 2026 elections. The decision was taken during a convention held this Tuesday (4), at the Arena Poliesportiva Amadeu Teixeira, in the Central-South Zone of Manaus. Roberto Cidade is 39 years old, a businessman and became governor of Amazonas in May this year, after being indirectly elected by the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), and will run for office for the first time. He was already elected state deputy and held the position of councilor for two months. ? The União Progressista Federation will contest this year's elections in Amazonas in coalition with Podemos and the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB). Convention calendar Conventions are events in which party members meet to choose candidates in elections. The deadline is August 5th. Next, the names must be registered with the Superior Court (TSE) by August 15th. The election campaign officially begins the following day. In this year's elections, on October 4th, Brazilians will vote for: president; governor; Senate (two seats per state); federal deputy; state deputy; Roberto Cidade's trajectory A native of Manaus, Roberto Cidade began his political career in 2016, when he ran for a councilor seat in the capital, but was not elected. In 2018, he was elected state deputy. Before taking office, between December of that year and February 2019, he held the position of councilor of Manaus as a substitute. In 2020, Roberto Cidade was elected president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), becoming the youngest parliamentarian to command the House. In the 2022 elections, he won re-election as state deputy with 105,510 votes, the highest vote in the history of Amazonas for the position. He was also reappointed as president of Aleam. In 2024, he ran for Mayor of Manaus and received 187,566 votes. In the same period, he assumed the presidency of the União Brasil municipal directory in the capital. In May 2026, he was elected governor of Amazonas in an indirect election held by the Legislative Assembly, following the resignation of then-governor Wilson Lima, who left office to run for the Senate, and vice-governor Tadeu de Souza, who is running for federal deputy. In the vote carried out by state deputies, Roberto Cidade received 24 votes from the Assembly and was elected governor. The ticket had Serafim Corrêa (PSB) as vice-governor. Three days after being elected governor, Roberto Cidade drew attention by reallocating R$126.6 million from the state's contingency reserve for the execution of parliamentary amendments. The reserve is a sum allocated in the budget to cover unexpected expenses or emergency situations. Before taking up the post, when he commanded the family company Navegação Cidade, he signed two contracts with the State Government to provide identical services in the same municipalities. Together, the amounts paid from public coffers exceeded R$50 million.
