Port of Santos carries out 1st supply of ship with ethanol in Brazil The first supply of a container ship with ethanol in Brazil was carried out at the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, this weekend. The operation, according to the companies responsible, is a milestone for the decarbonization of maritime transport and reinforces the country's role in supporting the renewable energy transition. The supply was carried out last Sunday (12) on the transoceanic container ship CMA CGM IRON. Registered in Malta and acquired by Santos Brasil in 2025, the ship has a capacity for 13 thousand 20-foot containers (TEU). ? The initiative, according to the companies, positions Brazil among the countries capable of carrying out this type of supply. The action had the support of several institutions and authorities responsible for regulatory, operational and port aspects. Ethanol was supplied on the transoceanic container ship CMA CGM IRON Disclosure/Copersucar According to the companies, it was necessary to transport the ethanol to the Port of Santos, store it in dedicated infrastructure and move it to the ship using a specialized barge (see images above). Decarbonization The ship is the first in a series of twelve GMA CGM vessels equipped with a tri-fuel engine certified to operate on ethanol. According to CMA CGM, the company's commitment is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. By 2031, the group plans to operate around 200 container ships capable of using low-carbon energy.
