The victims — Helena Ferreira de Freitas, Núbia Alves Brito, Maria de Fátima da Costa Boaventura and Marinalva Alves da Silva — were close friends and had planned a trip from Araguaína, in the northern region of Tocantins, to Barra Grande, on the coast of Piauí, where they would celebrate a reunion. Marinalva, who lived in Ireland, had recently returned to Brazil to visit her family. The information was confirmed by her niece, Rebeca Silva. According to the Maranhão Civil Police, the driver lost control of the steering wheel, the car overturned and fell into a cliff, becoming completely submerged in a lagoon on the banks of the highway.
