Solidarity and resocialization once again walked together at Hospital São José, in Criciúma. Through a partnership with the South Penitentiary, nine armchairs used by companions of patients from the Unified Health System (SUS) were completely renovated, providing more comfort for those who remain next to their family members during hospitalization. The initiative began in 2022 and was resumed in 2026, and makes it possible to combine the work carried out by inmates with the improvement of the structure offered by the hospital. "Through this work, prisoners contribute in a positive way to the entire community", explains the coordinator of Education and Social Promotion at the South Penitentiary, Rodrigo Roldão da Silva. In the partnership, Hospital São José provides the materials needed to renovate the seats, while Penitentiary South is responsible for transporting the equipment and carrying out the service, carried out by around eight inmates. The expectation is to continue the project with the recovery of new seats and stretchers. The next stage will also involve the participation of inmates from Case de Criciúma, who will work on making the upholstery covers through the unit's sewing workshop. According to the institutional director of Hospital São José, Sister Terezinha Buss, the initiative benefits both those who are hospitalized and their companions and those who find work an opportunity for a fresh start. "It's something that really encourages us in our mission. Knowing that these people are contributing to offering more comfort to our patients and companions is a reason for joy. Anyone who accompanies a hospitalized family member knows the difference it makes to receive a completely renovated armchair. Our gratitude to everyone who participated in this work and the desire for this partnership to continue", concludes Sister Terezinha.
