Renan Filho is launched as a candidate for the government of Alagoas during the MDB convention. Luciano Milano/g1 The Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) confirmed Renan Filho's candidacy for the government of Alagoas. The decision was taken during a convention held this Wednesday (5), in Maceió. Renan Filho is a senator and former Minister of Transport and will run for the Government of Alagoas for the third time. He was elected governor in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. Previously, he was mayor of Murici for two terms and federal deputy. Other candidacies approved at the convention: Renan Calheiros (MDB) for the Senate; José Wanderley (MDB for the Senate. “My candidacy is the continuation of a successful work project for Alagoas. While the country suffered from the pandemic, I opened hospitals as governor. My government project also goes hand in hand with President Lula”, said Renan.

??Convention calendar Conventions are events in which party members meet to choose candidates in elections. The deadline is August 5th. Next, the names must be registered with the Superior Court (TSE) by August 15th. The election campaign officially begins the following day. In this year's elections, on October 4th, Brazilians will vote for: president; governor; Senate (two seats per state); federal deputy; state deputy; Renan Filho's career Renan Filho is an economist and began his political career in Murici, where he was elected mayor in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. In 2010, he left the position to run for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies and was elected federal deputy. In 2014, he won the election for the Government of Alagoas in the first round. Four years later, he was re-elected, also in the first round, and remained in office until April 2022. In the same year, Renan Filho was elected senator for Alagoas. In January 2023, he took a leave of absence to take over the Ministry of Transport in the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He left the portfolio in April 2026 and returned to the Senate. Along the way, he was cited in investigations related to electoral donations and the works on the Canal do Sertão. In one of the investigations, the Federal Police concluded that there were not enough elements to hold him responsible. Renan Filho stated that the donations received were legal and declared to the Electoral Court. In 2025, the Regional Electoral Court of Alagoas dismissed an accusation of abuse of power in the 2022 elections due to lack of evidence. In the same year, he was sentenced, in the first instance, to pay compensation for moral damages to the mayor of Maceió, JHC, in a decision that still allowed appeal.
