Itaperuna reinforces prevention in the face of increased risk of fires The dry period has once again placed Itaperuna, in the Northwest of Rio de Janeiro, in a state of alert for fires. With dry vegetation, low air humidity and the absence of significant rainfall, the risk of fires in vegetation areas has increased, which has prompted prevention actions by authorities. To support preventive measures and possible contingency actions, Civil Defense monitors, together with the Fire Department, records of fire occurrences in vegetation in urban and rural areas of the municipality. The data shows fluctuations in recent years. In 2022, 208 occurrences were recorded. In 2023, the number dropped to 142 cases. ? This year, until July 29th, 85 cases of fires in vegetation had already been recorded. Occurrences include fires on the sides of highways, in forests, urban land, hills and other vegetation areas. In addition to environmental impacts, fires can also cause harm to the population's health due to smoke. Fires also compromise visibility on highways and can affect properties, plantations and electrical networks, increasing the risk of accidents. The authorities reinforce that causing fires is an environmental crime and advise the population not to use fire to clear land, burn garbage or vegetation remains, especially during the dry period.
