The crime took place last Sunday (19), in Rosário, 69 km from São Luís. The motivation is still being investigated. According to Guida, she was in a bar with friends when she was called by the suspect to talk near the square. The young woman claims that there was no argument or disagreement. When she was preparing to leave on her bicycle, she was surprised by the attacks. The suspect, identified as Alberto Felipe Caires Mendonça, aged 20, was arrested preventively on Thursday (23). The Maranhão Civil Police is investigating the case as an attempted qualified homicide. Guida suffered injuries to the head, face and chest. She spent two nights in the hospital and registered the incident at the police station. According to the police, the attack only ended after the intervention of a person who witnessed the crime. "My arm still doesn't let me sleep properly. I still feel constant pain", said Guida in an interview with TV Mirante. According to her, nothing indicated that she would be attacked moments later. "He was apparently normal, super friendly, you know? We didn't have any arguments, we didn't have any fights," he said. According to the victim, the man approached her when she was leaving and used a broken bottle to hit her. Guida's mother, Marlene Esteves, said she was at home, but felt that something was not right. When he arrived at the hospital, he found his daughter injured and the treatment room with a lot of blood. The young woman states that she was afraid to leave the house and had difficulty looking at herself in the mirror. Support from his mother and friends has helped during his recovery. "I was scared to even leave the house. I couldn't look at myself in the mirror, you know? Traumatized. I lived again, you know? I survived. God gave me a life again," said the victim. In testimony, he claimed that there were provocations and stated that he was drunk and acted on impulse. The Civil Police, however, considers that the violence used put the victim's life at risk. “The investigations show that the homicide was not carried out through the intervention of third parties, because the perpetrator broke a glass bottle that was in his hand and struck the victim in vital parts of the body, such as the face, head and chest”, said the delegate. The preventive detention was requested by the Civil Police and authorized by the Court. After the procedures at the police station, Alberto Felipe was sent to the prison system, where he remains at the disposal of the Justice. In a note sent to TV Mirante, Alberto Felipe Caires Mendonça's defense informed that he will not comment. Police did not identify motivation linked to gender identity TV Mirante questioned the Civil Police about the classification of the case. The corporation responded that, to date, the investigation has not identified elements that indicate that the crime was motivated by Guida's gender identity. The president of the Human Rights Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association in Maranhão (OAB-MA), Erik Moraes, defended that a possible transphobic motivation be investigated. “Investigation into the possibility of transphobia is very important, as it completely changes the criminal framework, procedural rules and the harshness of the sentence,” he stated. According to the Maranhão Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals, ten attacks against trans people were recorded in the state between December 2025 and June 2026. “Transphobia is something structural, just like racism, right?”, stated the president of the association, Andressa Sheron. She also defended the fight against violence and violations of the rights of the trans population. The State Secretariat for Human Rights and Popular Participation reported that it develops projects aimed at promoting the rights of the LGBTQIA+ population.
