The animal had injuries and was sent by the Maritime and Environmental Guard (GMA) to the BW Institute, where it receives medical-veterinary care and will undergo the rehabilitation process. The team was called after the primate was found in a vulnerable situation. During the initial assessment, the agents found that the howler monkey had injuries, possibly caused by being run over or by a territorial confrontation with another animal of the same species. The coordinator of the Maritime and Environmental Guard, Ricardo Medina, also explains that howler monkeys are important sentinels of yellow fever. According to Medina, primates do not transmit the disease to people, but can be infected by the virus after being bitten by an infected mosquito. "When another mosquito bites an infected primate, it carries the virus and can transmit it to other animals and also to humans," he explained. When finding an injured, sick or dead wild animal, the advice is to keep your distance and call the Municipal Civil Guard by calling 153 so that the responsible team can carry out appropriate care.
