Matão Hospital performs first robotic hip surgery Carlos Fernando Malzoni Hospital, in Matão (SP), performed this Saturday (18) the first robotic hip surgery in the institution's history. The procedure marks a new stage in the incorporation of advanced technologies in the field of orthopedics and promises to offer more precision in the placement of prostheses, increasing safety and predictability of results for patients. ? Follow g1 São Carlos and Araraquara on Instagram The first patient to undergo the procedure in Matão (SP) was businessman Eberton Rodrigo Dutra Rodrigo Sargaço/EPTV The first patient to undergo the procedure was businessman Eberton Rodrigo Dutra, who has lived with a chronic hip disease for years. After already having a prosthesis implanted on his left side three years ago, he needed to return to the operating room to carry out the same intervention on his right hip. "You stop accompanying your daughter, who is 14 years old, wanting to play, right? That's what gets you the most. But work also gets in the way a lot, your leg hurts a lot, it's quite uncontrollable", reported the businessman before the surgery. Despite natural anxiety, Eberton demonstrated confidence in the procedure and recovery. "I hope to be well, very happy, more excited. Being able to carry out the projects we have with more peace of mind and less pain", he stated. The robot acts as a support tool for the surgeon, providing images, measurements and guidance in real time during the operation. The first stage of the surgery is performed by the medical team, responsible for preparing the area where the prosthesis will be implanted. After removing part of the femur bone, the robotic system comes into action. Using X-ray images transmitted to a screen installed in the operating room, the equipment creates a detailed mapping of the patient's anatomy and helps the doctor position the prosthesis more precisely. "It helps with precision, ensuring that the result can really be much better. It mainly gives us the rotation, angulation and length. It gives an exact dimension of what we need to do", explained orthopedist Edson Bergamaschi, responsible for the surgery. Advancement in orthopedics Matão Hospital (SP) performs robotic hip surgery for the first time Rodrigo Sargaço/EPTV Carlos Fernando Malzoni Hospital had already performed, in 2025, its first robotic knee surgery. Now, with the introduction of technology for hip procedures, the institution is expanding its operations in an area that is still little known in the country. According to experts, there are currently only nine pieces of equipment capable of performing this type of surgery in Brazil. “Robotic surgery has reached a very important level. Today we already perform knee and hip procedures, but this specific technology for the hip is still quite restricted. Matão is well ahead of many large capitals in this aspect", highlighted robotics specialist Catharina Cardoso Cordeiro. According to Bergamaschi, the main difference between knee and hip procedures is in the way the robot participates in the surgery. "In knee surgery, the robot participates a little more. As for the hip, it is necessary to fully prepare the implant site so that it indicates the appropriate position of the prosthesis, respecting the anatomy of each patient", he explained. The expectation is to expand access to the procedure Hospital de Matão (SP) performs robotic hip surgery for the first time Rodrigo Sargaço/EPTV The performance of the first robotic hip surgery paves the way for more patients to have access to technology in the region. According to the hospital, the demand for robotic knee procedures has already exceeded the expectations of the medical team. Now, the intention is to expand the use of technology also for hip surgeries. “As with the knee, the demand surprised us. Now we are going to expand this service and invite doctors from the region to perform the procedures here. Our doors are open so that the population can take advantage of this technology", said Bergamaschi. The expectation is that the increasing use of robotic surgery will contribute to increasingly precise procedures, more efficient recovery and better results for patients treated by the hospital.
