Former prisoner is close to completing his medical course Personal archive/Disclosure Eight months ago, medical student Wallace William da Costa, aged 47, applied for a university transfer. He is studying for an undergraduate degree at the Federal University of Northern Tocantins and intends to continue his studies at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais, to be close to his family. He finished the 8th period and is preparing to start internship. According to Wallace, the transfer request was made in November 2025, with the UFNT, but the request only arrived at the UFJF in April 2026. The Federal University of Northern Tocantins reported that the destination institution confirmed receipt of the request on June 30, 2026. The process is still awaiting a response from the medical course in Juiz de Fora. ? The university student has contact with his family only during university holidays, with two thousand kilometers between Tocantins and Minas Gerais. In addition to missing him, Wallace intends to return to help take care of his daughter, who is diagnosed with autism, as he is unable to take the family to Araguaína. For Wallace, the delay in processing the transfer request sounds like prejudice. The student was arrested in 1997, at the age of 18, for drug trafficking and served six years in prison. The Court of Justice of Minas Gerais confirmed compliance with the sentence and the extinction of punishment. "What to think, if not prejudice. A request was made in November 2025 [at UFNT], and the Federal University of Juiz de Fora only received it in April 2026. A process was stopped for more than 70 days and only started after I appeared in person to collect it", he said. Wallace served four years of his sentence in a closed regime at the José Edson Cavalieri Penitentiary, in Minas Gerais. He decided when he was in prison and resumed his studies. "I looked through the bars and saw a beautiful moon, and I realized, at that moment, that it wasn't doing me any good. The following week, I started studying in the penitentiary. I served four years in prison and two years on parole. During my parole, I took a nursing course and started working," he said. In addition to the medical course, the student also passed several competitions. In 2025, he passed a public examination for the position of doctor in Minas Gerais. Now, he hopes to complete the course to take on a public role. See more news from the region on g1 Tocantins.
