Resident records moment when house is carried away by the current in Serra Gaúcha The force of the waters once again marked the life of a family in Serra Gaúcha. Adriana Glanert's father, Luiz Antonio Glanert, aged 70, died on Thursday (23) after falling into the Rio das Antas and being swept away by the current. The tragedy occurs less than three years after the daughter lost the house where she lived, washed away during a flood in September 2023. A week ago, the state once again experienced bad weather caused by the accumulation of water in the beds after a period of heavy rain in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. ? Access the g1 RS channel on WhatsApp On Wednesday (22), Adriana recorded on video the moment when another residence was swept away by the Rio das Antas towards the Rio Taquari. She had considered the 2023 flood an atypical event, until she witnessed the climate tragedy that hit Rio Grande do Sul in May 2024 and, now, witnessed the impacts of rising river levels again. "The rain is scary. The wind is scary. How long will we be afraid of the flood?", he asks. On Thursday, Luiz Antonio felt bad, fell into the river and died. "He spent the whole night before helping his neighbors because of the river's flood, taking things out of their houses. Today (Thursday) he and my brother went there to catch a 'caíco' (small wooden boat) that passed by the riverbank, he said it would be missed by those who have it. He felt bad, lost his balance and fell into the river", says Adriana. The family knows Rio das Antas, says Adriana. Her grandfather was born in the region, in 1929. She remembers that a large stone located near her house bore the mark of the 1941 flood, which, until two years ago, was known as the largest ever recorded in RS. "We know the river. We know when a flood is going to come. This flood that we had yesterday happens almost every year. But those in 2023 and 2024 were out of the norm. My grandfather built the bridge and said that no flood would take it. My house was above the 1941 mark. Both were washed away. We were the last people who crossed the bridge before it collapsed", he recalls. Luiz Antonio Glanert will lie in state until 3pm this Friday at the Bom Conselho Linha Colussi Chapel, in Monte Belo do Sul. His burial will take place in Santa Bárbara, at the Community Cemetery.
