The love for São João brought together security guard Dangelo Magalhães, 28, and self-employed Carine Pereira, 25, and the couple has been combining work with rehearsals, competitions and raising their two children for five years. Together, they turned their passion for São João into a legacy and involved their children in the June tradition. They are part of the June gang Sassaricano na Roça, in the capital Rio Branco, and have transformed their passion for popular culture into a family project. According to Dangelo, his daughter Dávila had her first contact with the gang when she was just four months old, in June last year. Davi, according to him, was always shy and started to participate more actively in June activities this year. Today, he feels more at ease, he plays, has fun, created friendships and this is very gratifying for me, as it was within the gang that I was able to show him a different world", he shares. Carine says that the idea of ??bringing children into the June world came from the desire for them to have the experience and live the joy of the Saint John festivities. "It's beautiful to see how the gang transforms. It means everything to me to see my son overcoming his shyness and my baby in the middle of it all, since she was little, it's priceless. It's our moment of togetherness, of forgetting our problems and being happy together on the court", she says with emotion. He says they met in movement, through friends at get-togethers. "We were from different gangs and, as fate would have it, we met and have been together for five years," says the guard. The freelancer details that she started dancing in June square dances in 2013, but spent a few years away. According to her, her love for São João never disappeared and, therefore, she decided to return in 2022. "I have already participated in competitions here in the city and I also had the opportunity to participate in Brasília in 2023", she states. After a day of work, Dangelo says he goes straight to rehearsals and gang coordination meetings. "Our routine is very busy. I work all day, Carine stays at home taking care of the children. When I arrive, around 6:30 pm, I just take a shower and go to rehearsal at 7 pm. We rehearse until 9:30 pm and then I still have gang coordination meetings. We usually get home around midnight. And that's how it goes all week", he explains. According to Carine, reconciling the routine is not easy, mainly because she has to take care of the house, her son's school routine and her 1-year-old baby. "And even finding time to rehearse requires a huge effort. We manage in our thirties, but when we love São João, we find strength where we don't even have", he describes. House that turns into a dressing room On performance days, the house turns into a real dressing room and the costumes occupy most of the rooms. Despite the mess, the security guard states that the family tries to keep the place organized. "Mainly because of Dávila, who loves to change the costumes. But when it's presentation day, it's kind of impossible to keep it organized," he says. "Including our children within this wonderful culture is very important not only for them, but especially for us parents as well, who want to show how special this culture is for us. I have always taken with me that my family will be included in everything I do", he argues. "It's incredible to see how much Davi sees the world differently than he did before. The gang changed his life a lot for the better and that's priceless", he celebrates. The expectation, according to him, is that the love and affection for São João will continue in the next generations. "There will come a day when we will say 'It's time to stop', and they will continue, if they want of course, to live this wonderful thing that is São João", he comments. Like her husband, she shares that the expectation is that they will continue the tradition. "I hope that Davi takes this confidence he gained and that Dávila knows that São João has been in her blood since she was a baby. Today, in addition to the titles won throughout his career in the June movement, including the best June king of Acre in 2025, Dangelo considers that his greatest achievement came off the stage.
