Shaken baby syndrome (or SBS) happens when a baby is shaken suddenly and repeatedly, in a non-accidental way. This movement can cause serious injuries to the brain and eyes, such as cerebral and retinal hemorrhages, as well as fractures of the skull and long bones, such as the arms and legs. In general, the syndrome affects babies under one year old, and especially those under six months old. "The expert suggests that there is a very high probability that this child was a victim of what is known in medicine as shaken baby syndrome. It is also important to mention that in parallel with this expertise we had other evidence", explains the delegate. The investigation revealed that the baby had a history of violence. In early April, about a month before he died, the child was admitted to Hospital Vida e Saúde, in Santa Rosa, with head trauma. At the time, the mother gave different versions of what happened. The parents told the police that nothing had happened and that the child suddenly started feeling sick. After the death, they maintained the version in a second interrogation. However, the expert report pointed out that the fatal injury was a new fact, unrelated to the previous hospitalization. "The possibility of a domestic accident is practically ruled out. If this child was not directly attacked, she may have been a victim of what medicine knows as shaken baby syndrome", concludes the delegate. The investigation was concluded and sent to Justice. The father and mother were indicted for qualified homicide against a child under 14 years of age. The Guardianship Council monitors the case. The baby's eight-year-old brother is under the custody of his maternal grandmother. Couple arrested for death of two-month-old baby in RS Reproduction/RBS TV VIDEOS: Everything about RS
