Remember the case Professor reports assault during run on Avenida Litorânea, in São Luís The Physics professor at the State University of Maranhão (UEMA), Welberth Santos Ferreira, used social media to report moments of terror experienced on Friday morning (19), while running on Avenida Litorânea, in São Luís. The case happened hours after two runners suffered an attempted robbery in the same region. According to the teacher, he was approached by armed criminals during training in a poorly lit area, close to a playground. According to the report, three motorcycles with five occupants participated in the action, at least three of which were armed. Welberth said that the robbers appeared suddenly and demanded that he hand over his cell phone. “Three bikers appeared out of nowhere, pointed a gun at me and asked for my cell phone. I don't run with my cell phone", he reported. As he didn't have the device with him, the criminals started to search him. When they realized that he was carrying the car key, they stole the object and also the ring he was wearing. "When I raised my hand, they saw the car key, they stole my car key, they stole my ring", he said. The teacher stated that the ring was tight on his finger and that, during the action, he received a punch in the face. According to him, the attack was so strong that it left him unconscious for a few seconds. "As the ring was tight, I was punched so hard that I fell to the ground," he said. In another part of the report, he stated: "They threw a punch at me that I knocked out here in the middle of Litorânea." Shortly after, he received help from a runner who was passing by the scene. The professor publicly thanked the support provided by a man identified only as Anderson, who helped him after the crime. "I wanted to thank Anderson from the bottom of my heart, who I didn't even know. He passed by, gave me all the help, took me home to get the spare key to my car", he stated. According to Welberth, a Highway Police vehicle passed through the region shortly after the robbery and began searching for the suspects, but they were not located. "The police officers appeared shortly after, knocked on the spot and did not catch them", he reported. After the incident, the teacher filed a police report and stated that he felt severe pain in his eye due to the attack. "I'm now going to file a police report. I'm feeling a lot of pain in my eye," he said. Emotionally shaken, Welberth stated that he is thinking about interrupting his routine of training and sports competitions. He recalled that he had already stopped practicing other activities for safety reasons. According to the professor, he stopped swimming in the sea after the death of a triathlete in the Espigão Costeiro region and also stopped cycling on the streets, opting only for training on a stationary bike. "Honestly, now I am thinking about stopping competitions and training. That's the feeling", he said. Welberth also said that he was experiencing a period of recovery in the sport and was managing to improve his performance in races. "It was the year that I was finding my rhythm again. I managed to win some races again, but now I'm going to stop everything. I don't know what I'm going to do from now on," he declared. When contacted by g1, the Public Security Secretariat of Maranhão (SSP-MA) has not yet commented on the case. Runners were also approached by criminals Hours earlier, another similar case had been reported by trainer Dilson Pará. According to him, two runners were approached by armed criminals while they were training near the training center, on Avenida Litorânea. Dilson said he was cycling on another stretch of the coast when the crime happened. According to the coach, at around 4:20 am, three motorbikes with six men dressed in black approached the athletes. "Today I went out to cycle while two women were running near the CT. As I was on a bicycle, I went a little further, to Iemanjá (a square). When I came back, it had just happened", he reported. According to him, the runners came to believe that the occupants of the motorcycles were police officers. "At first, they thought they were police officers. But when the motorcycles came up on the sidewalk, they realized it wasn't," he said. Frightened, the two women ran in different directions, but were caught up by the criminals. "The men went after them, approached them both and asked for their cell phones. As they didn't have anything with them, the men searched them to check them and then left," he said. Despite the scare, no one was injured. "When I arrived, one of them was crying a lot. I stayed with them for a long time trying to calm them down. Thank God, no one was hurt," said the coach. After the two episodes, athletes who use Avenida Litorânea for running, walking and cycling training once again expressed concern about safety in the region, especially during the early hours of the morning. “A warning for all of us who train so early: you can’t be too careful,” warned Dilson Pará.
