She received a bone marrow transplant from her own mother, Dayane Duarte, and faced long treatment. Dayane's bone marrow was harvested on February 18, and the transplant took place the following day. Since then, Sabrina has faced a long recovery period. During her hospitalization, she needed to be intubated twice and remained under intensive care until she showed clinical improvement. After being discharged from hospital, mother and daughter will remain in Natal for a few days for medical monitoring. If the recovery continues to evolve as expected, the forecast is that they will return home, to Paraíba, in the next few days. In Brazil, registration is done through the National Registry of Voluntary Bone Marrow Donors, coordinated by the National Cancer Institute. The process is simple: a small blood sample is collected for genetic compatibility (HLA) analysis, and the data is stored in a national and international bank. If a compatible patient appears, the donor is called for additional examinations and, once compatibility is confirmed, the donor makes the donation. Donation can occur in two ways: by puncture of the bone marrow, with material removed directly from the pelvic bone, under anesthesia; by apheresis, a method similar to blood donation, in which stem cells are collected through the bloodstream after drug stimulation. The chance of finding a fully compatible donor may be one in every 100,000 people. Therefore, increasing the number of registered volunteers is essential to save lives.
