For a century, the history of the Portuguese winery Caves Messias has been written in each harvest, each bottle and each toast shared. There are 100 years of respect for terroir and careful attention to the production of wines internationally recognized for their extremely high quality. Experience and in-depth knowledge allow Messias to produce almost all styles of wines in some of the main appellations in Portugal – Douro, Dão and Bairrada –, culminating in a portfolio of impressive quality, from sparkling wines to fortified wines. For 100 years, Caves Messias has remained controlled by the same family. Disclosure. Founded in 1926, by Messias Ferreira Baptista, in Mealhada, in the Bairrada region, the company is currently managed by the fourth generation of the family. The headquarters, built between 1938 and 1943, is still the company's main production unit today. Quinta do Valdoeiro, Bairrada Located in Vacariça, Mealhada, Quinta do Valdoeiro was acquired by the Messias Family in the 1940s. Considered one of the most beautiful and well-structured agricultural properties in the Bairrada region, it currently has 150 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vineyards. In addition to Portuguese grapes, the winery also uses international varieties such as Quinta do Valdeiro Chardonnay. Disclosure. Among the characteristics of the terroir are low fertility soils, a hot and dry temperate climate, slopes that receive adequate sunlight and the appreciation of native grape varieties. In the region, Touriga Nacional, Baga, Castelão, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown; among the whites, Arinto, Bical, Cercial and Chardonnay. All Caves Messias wines in the region are DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) Bairrada. Quinta do Penedo, Dão Quinta do Penedo, currently covering 20 hectares, is located in Aldeia de Carvalho, in Mangualde, in the heart of the Dão region. The property's vineyards date back to 1930, when it belonged to the family of Mr. General Santos Costa, and were acquired by the Messias family in 1998. Quinta do Penedo Branco is a high quality wine produced with the autochthonous Encruzado grape. Disclosure. In 2000, with the aim of modernizing the vineyards and increasing the quality of production, some areas were replanted. Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Encruzado are the grapes from the new plantations and are now in full production. The remaining areas are occupied by the varieties Tinta Roriz, Jaen, Tinto Cão, among others. All Caves Messias wines in the region are DOC Dão. Quinta do Cachão, Douro Quinta do Cachão, located in Ferradosa, is located on the bank of the Douro River, in Cima Corgo, the most inhospitable, ancient and beautiful region to which the river gives its name and which is a UNESCO Heritage Site. This vineyard was planted for the first time in 1845, by Barão do Seixo, and was later acquired by the Afonso Cabral family who, in turn, sold it to Messias in 1956. Quinta do Cachão Reserva Douro DOC is a high-end red wine produced in one of the most famous terroirs in Portugal. Disclosure. Stretching across the slopes of a hill that has a small chapel dedicated to Saint Bárbara, the Quinta currently occupies 200 hectares, half of which are cultivated with vineyards, classified as the letter A, the highest category on the Douro scale. The grapes planted are traditional for the region and mainly produce Port wines. Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are the dominant grape varieties, followed by the Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão varieties. In addition to fortified wines, Quinta do Cachão produces prestigious still wines. Port wines are fortified wines (also called liqueurs) made in the Douro region. The technique has been used since the 18th century and there are red, white and rosé Port wines. It has several styles such as Ruby, Tawny, LBV, Vintage, Safrados and with a minimum of decades of elaboration. Porto Messias Tawny is a classic fortified wine, famous for its excellent value for money. Disclosure. Most red Port wines are cuts from a wide variety of native grapes, including Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Amarela.
